Hollie Stevens, 1982-2012

Hollie Stevens died on the 3rd July from breast cancer at the tragically early age of just 30. She was better know as a hardcore porn actress, but she did some spanking work as well. She was so well known that even the Daily Mail ran not one, but two stories about her.

Although cancer will be the official cause of death, actually Holly died because she had the misfortune to live in a country that requires private medical insurance. By the time she had discovered the lump on her breast it was too late to go and buy it because the cover does not include existing conditions. Her friends rallied around and raised money for her treatment, but by then it was just too late.

I have always thanked God that I was born an Englishman, but an extra source of pride is that my country still has a functioning health service. It has many holes in its safety net, but Holly would be alive today had she lived here.

I'll preface this by saying that the person you know as Hollie was someone I considered a friend.

Your no doubt well-intentioned diatribe against the US healthcare "system" is, in this case, just wrong. Hollie died from a particularly aggressive cancer, despite the efforts of a number of excellent doctors. The NHS have no magic wand that would have cured her, although the British system would have made things easier for her and her husband once she was diagnosed. Perhaps that would have been enough to give them some more time together (and certainly improve the quality of the time they had), which would have been priceless, but it wasn't a lack of healthcare that killed her; it was cancer.

By her own admission she did not go to a doctor when she discovered the lump on her breast because she had no insurance. That would not have happened in my country, so the cancer would have been discovered earlier and, hopefully, treated.

By your own admission the British system - or the Canadian or that of any other civilised country - would have given her more time with her new husband even if the treatment had failed.

So yes, cancer killed her, but it took root because she did not have any insurance and even had it been untreatable, anyway, a civilised country would have lengthened her final days and made them more comfortable.
